✨The coffee shop at Maple Street

Every morning at 7:15, I ordered the same thing. A medium caramel latte, oat milk, extra foam. Every morning at 7:18, he walked through the door, rain or shine, and ordered a black coffee. Two sugars. No cream.

We'd never spoken. Not once. But I knew the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled at the barista. I knew he ran his fingers through his hair when he was tired. I knew he always left a five-dollar tip, even when he looked like he couldn't afford it.

I was just another face in his routine. Or so I thought.

Then one Tuesday, I arrived to find the coffee shop dark. A handwritten sign on the door: Closed for renovations. Back in two weeks.

My heart sank. It was ridiculous, really. I didn't know this man. But the thought of two weeks without that 7:18 moment felt like losing something I never had.

I stood there, frozen, when I heard footsteps behind me.

"Guess we're both out of luck."

I turned. It was him. He was wearing a faded grey sweater and holding a travel mug, looking just as disappointed as I felt.

"Looks like it," I managed, my voice embarrassingly small.

He smiled, and I forgot how to breathe. "I'm Ethan, by the way. Since we clearly have nowhere else to be, I thought I'd finally introduce myself."

"Amelia," I whispered.

"I know," he said softly.

I blinked. "You… know?"

He laughed, a warm, nervous sound. "I've been working up the courage to talk to you for six months, Amelia. Six months of watching you order that ridiculously sweet latte and thinking you're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen."

My heart stopped. "Six months?"

"Every single day," he confessed. "I wake up at six just to catch that 7:18 moment. You have no idea how many times I've rehearsed this conversation in my head."

I felt tears prick my eyes. "I thought I was invisible to you."

"Invisible?" He stepped closer, his voice dropping. "You're the only thing I see. That's why I'm standing here, terrified, asking if you'd like to get coffee somewhere else. Anywhere else. With me."

The world tilted. All those silent mornings, all those stolen glances, and he'd been feeling it too.

"Yes," I breathed. "Yes, I'd love that."

His whole face transformed into the brightest smile I'd ever seen. "Really?"

"Really," I laughed, wiping a tear. "But fair warning—I'm high maintenance. Extra foam is non-negotiable."

He chuckled, offering his hand. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

I slipped my fingers into his, and the warmth of his palm felt like coming home. As we walked away from the darkened coffee shop, I realized that sometimes the universe doesn't give you what you expect. It gives you something better.

He looked at me, eyes full of promise. "You know, it's funny. I've been going to that shop for three years, and the best thing I ever found was standing right outside it."

I squeezed his hand, my heart so full it ached. "What happens now?"

He stopped, turned to face me fully, and said the words that would change everything.

"Now? Now we start our story."
