Part 7 (Final): The Stranger Who Knew My Coffee Order.
The shape stopped at the mouth of the alley. Backlit by the morning sun, all Ava could make out at first was a silhouette tall, unhurried, hands in his coat pockets like he had all the time in the world.
Then he stepped into the light, and Ava's stomach dropped.
It was Theo.
Not the Theo standing beside her, jaw tight, arm braced protectively across her chest. A different one. Older. Colder. The same face, aged by something that wasn't just years aged by whatever choice had split these two versions of the same man down two different paths.
"Ah," the older Theo said, almost fondly, looking past present-day Theo straight at the woman who claimed to be Ava's future self. "You actually did it. You came back."
"I told you I would," older Ava said, stepping forward, shielding the younger couple with her own body. "Every single time."
"And every single time," he said, "I find you anyway."
Present-day Ava's mind raced to catch up. "You're him," she whispered. "You're future Theo. But you're not you're not the one who"
"Marries you? No." His eyes flicked to the Theo standing beside her, something like grief and hatred tangled together in his expression. "That was supposed to be me. In the life I lived, it was me until the day I chose wrong. Money. Ambition. A version of myself I liked better than the one who loved you unconditionally. By the time I understood what I'd traded away, it was too late to undo it in my own timeline."
"So you're trying to stop this one," Theo said slowly, "so you can take his place."
"So I can fix it," the older man said, quiet and raw. "So somebody gets to live the life I threw away."
Older Ava stepped fully between them now, voice steady despite the tears in her eyes. "It doesn't work like that. You can't steal a life that was never yours to take twice. I came back to protect this Theo the one who's still capable of choosing right not to hand you a second chance you already burned."
For a long moment, nobody moved. Then something in the older man's shoulders sagged, the fight going out of him all at once, replaced by something that looked almost like relief.
"I just wanted to see it happen for someone," he said quietly. "Even if it couldn't be me."
He turned and walked back out of the alley, out of the light, and didn't look back.
Older Ava exhaled, turning to the two people in front of her the ones who still had every choice ahead of them, unmade and unbroken.
"Choose right," she said softly, echoing his words like a warning turned into a gift. "Every day. It's the only thing that actually keeps this story."
Then she smiled Ava's own smile, worn soft with years and walked out of the alley the same way she'd come, leaving the two of them standing together in the morning light, hands finding each other without needing to be asked.
Present-day Theo looked down at Ava. "So. Still want that coffee tomorrow?"
Ava laughed a real laugh, coffee-stained and certain and nodded.
