Part 3: The Tailor Who Stitched Second Chances
Yusra held onto him tighter, feeling the fragile weight of their remaining time slipping away with every passing minute. "How can I promise that? Every happiness I imagine feels impossible without you in it."
"It won't feel that way forever," Tomas said gently, brushing tears from her cheek with familiar tenderness. "Grief doesn't erase love, Yusra. It just changes shape, eventually. I need you to trust that, even though I know it's impossible to believe right now."
They sat together in the garden as the light shifted subtly around them, the magic's boundaries becoming increasingly apparent, colors softening at the edges the way dreams do just before waking.
"Tell me about your life," Tomas said suddenly, surprising her. "Not just grief, Yusra. Tell me what you'd want it to look like eventually, once you're ready."
Yusra considered the question through her tears, genuinely trying to imagine a future she'd refused to picture since his *****. "I always wanted to open a small bakery. You know that we talked about it constantly before... before everything happened. I don't know if I could do it alone."
"You're stronger alone than you realize," Tomas said firmly. "You built half of everything in our life together, Yusra, even when I took more credit for it than I deserved. The bakery isn't my dream that you're borrowing. It's yours too, completely, whether or not I'm there to see it happen."
Yusra felt something shift slightly in her chest not less grief, exactly, but perhaps the smallest, most fragile beginning of hope alongside it. "I miss you so much it feels physically impossible to keep breathing some mornings."
"I know," Tomas said softly. "But you keep breathing anyway. Every single morning. That's not weakness, Yusra. That's the most extraordinary kind of strength there is."
The garden's edges blurred further, the magic clearly nearing its limit, and Yusra felt sudden, desperate panic at the thought of losing him again so soon after finally getting him back.
"I don't want this hour to end," she said, voice breaking completely now.
Tomas held her face gently, memorizing her features with the same tender attention he'd always given her, even in their most ordinary, unremarkable moments together. "It doesn't have to end here, though, Yusra. Not really. I'll still be in every quiet moment you remember us sharing, in every choice you make honoring the life we built together. That doesn't disappear just because this particular hour does."
"Promise me you'll be happy too," Yusra said suddenly, desperately. "Wherever you are now. Promise me it's peaceful."
Tomas smiled, warm and reassuring despite the encroaching dissolution of the magic around them. "It is. I promise. And I'll be even more at peace, Yusra, if I know you eventually find your own happiness too, even without me there to witness it directly."
The garden shimmered one final time, colors bleeding entirely into soft, hazy light, and Yusra felt Tomas's hand slip slowly from hers despite her desperate grip.
"I love you," she said quickly, wanting the words to be the very last thing spoken before their time fully expired. "Completely, always, no matter how much time passes."
"I love you too," Tomas said, voice already fading with the dissolving magic around them. "Go live fully, Yusra. That's the only goodbye gift I actually need from you."
The garden vanished entirely, and Yusra found herself alone again in the ordinary evening light, the magic coat now simply plain fabric in her trembling hands, an entire hour of impossible reunion complete and irreversibly finished.
