Part 3: The Innkeeper Who Housed Wandering Ghosts

Weeks passed, Perpetua's nightly visits becoming as essential to her days as breathing, her growing affection for Theodric deepening steadily despite the impossible circumstances tethering them together.

"I've been thinking," she said one evening, watching moonlight filter through the window where he always stood. "About what might actually help you move on. Sixty years of unfinished business, Theodric perhaps it's time we discovered exactly what that means."

Theodric's expression grew thoughtful, though something like fear flickered beneath his consideration. "I confess, I've grown rather attached to our current arrangement, Perpetua. Part of me worries that resolving whatever keeps me tethered here might mean losing you entirely."

"I understand that fear," Perpetua said gently. "But you deserve genuine peace, Theodric, not simply prolonged existence trapped in loneliness, however less lonely I've hopefully made these past weeks."

Theodric considered her words seriously. "You're right, of course. Though I confess, I'm uncertain how to properly investigate unfinished business I've never fully understood myself, despite sixty years of consideration."

"Tell me more about the love you mentioned," Perpetua said carefully. "The one you regretted not pursuing. Perhaps that's exactly where we should begin looking."

Theodric's expression grew distant, old memory surfacing slowly. "Her name was Cordelia. We met at a small gathering, danced once, spoke only briefly before circumstances separated us. I always intended to seek her out properly, court her as she deserved. I kept delaying, telling myself there would be time enough eventually. Then illness took me suddenly, before I ever properly pursued what I genuinely wanted."

"Do you know what happened to her? After you passed, I mean?"

"I don't," Theodric admitted. "I've had sixty years to wonder, never once discovering any answer."

Perpetua felt a sudden, determined idea forming. "What if I searched for her? Or her descendants, at least. Perhaps discovering what became of Cordelia might finally provide the resolution you've been missing."

Theodric's translucent expression shifted with cautious hope. "You'd do that? Search out an old regret from sixty years ago, purely to help me finally find peace?"

"Of course," Perpetua said simply. "I care about you, Theodric. Genuinely, completely, regardless of how impossible our circumstances remain. If helping you properly resolve this old regret means finally granting you peace, even if it means eventually losing you, I'd rather that than watching you remain trapped in unresolved loneliness forever."

Theodric studied her with profound gratitude and equally profound sorrow. "I don't deserve such generosity, Perpetua. Not when helping me might cost you everything we've built together these past weeks."

"Let me decide what I deserve to risk," Perpetua said firmly. "I'll begin searching tomorrow. For now, let's simply enjoy tonight, exactly as we have every night since I first unlocked this door."
