The Locksmith Who Opened Hearts
Every lock Thaddeus ever made held a peculiar quality they couldn't be picked, forced, or broken, only opened by whoever the lock itself decided was worthy. His grandmother had taught him the craft, along with a warning: never make a lock for your own heart, because hearts locked by choice are far harder to properly open again than anyone realizes.
He'd ignored her warning after his fiancée left him at the altar, forging a small, intricate lock and sealing it around his own chest in a private, desperate ritual meant to protect himself from ever again risking that particular pain.
Five years later, Wren wandered into his shop seeking an ordinary lock for her grandmother's old trunk, entirely unaware she was about to become the first person in half a decade capable of making Thaddeus's carefully guarded heart ache with unfamiliar, unwelcome hope.
"This is beautiful work," she said, studying the intricate locks lining his workshop walls. "I've never seen craftsmanship this detailed."
"Thank you," Thaddeus said, unusually flustered by her genuine admiration. "Most customers simply want function, not artistry."
"Function and artistry aren't mutually exclusive," Wren observed, studying him now rather than simply his work. "Though I confess, you seem rather guarded yourself, for someone whose craft is literally about creating protective barriers."
Thaddeus felt something uncomfortable shift in his chest the old lock, he realized with alarm, straining slightly against whatever unexpected pull her genuine curiosity provoked. "Occupational hazard, I suppose," he said carefully, deflecting.
Wren studied him a moment longer, something perceptive in her thoughtful gaze. "I don't believe that's entirely true. I think perhaps you've locked something rather important away yourself, quite deliberately."
Thaddeus's breath caught, startled by her uncomfortably accurate observation. "That's a rather bold assumption for someone I've just met."
"Perhaps," Wren said, unbothered by his defensive tone. "Though I find myself rather curious what exactly you're protecting so carefully, Thaddeusand whether you've ever properly considered that some things deserve to be reopened, rather than permanently sealed away."
