Part 2: The Wedding Dress That Wouldn't Let Go
Serena stared at her aunt's translucent reflection, torn between overwhelming disbelief and creeping, undeniable dread. "What exactly did you see? About Marcus?"
Cordelia's spirit hesitated, old grief resurfacing visibly across her ghostly features. "The same restless eyes my own fiancé had, the night before our wedding. The same careless dismissal of things that clearly mattered deeply to me. I watched him three days ago, Serena, when you brought this dress into your bedroom to consider wearing it. He visited while you were at work, searching through your belongings rather more thoroughly than innocent curiosity would explain."
"That's not possible," Serena said, though uncertainty was already creeping into her voice. "Marcus wouldn't do that."
"Check your jewelry box," Cordelia urged. "The one your mother gave you, with the false bottom compartment. I watched him find it, Serena. Watched him examine something hidden there with considerable, troubling interest."
Serena's chest tightened with sudden, sick understanding. She did have a hidden compartment containing old letters from a previous relationship, ones she'd never properly disclosed to Marcus, embarrassed by how emotionally raw and vulnerable they revealed her to be.
"Even if that's true," she said slowly, "that doesn't prove he's genuinely dangerous. Simply curious, perhaps overly so."
Cordelia's expression grew desperately urgent. "My own fiancé searched my belongings too, the week before our wedding. Discovered old letters from a previous suitor I'd never properly disclosed. He confronted me that very night, Serena not with genuine hurt, but with calculated, controlled fury I'd never witnessed from him before. I died that same night, and the official report called it an accident. I promise you, it was not."
Serena felt genuine terror settling deep into her chest. "You're saying he killed you."
"I'm saying," Cordelia said carefully, "that I recognize dangerous patterns considerably more clearly now than I did while I was still naively, hopefully alive. Marcus discovered your hidden letters three days ago. Has he mentioned anything unusual since then? Any subtle shift in behavior you might have initially dismissed as simple wedding stress?"
Serena's mind raced backward, uncomfortable memory surfacing slowly. Marcus had been unusually attentive the past several days, insisting on handling nearly every wedding detail himself, growing oddly possessive about her schedule, her whereabouts, even suggesting she needn't bother inviting several close friends to the ceremony.
"He's been different," she admitted slowly, dread building steadily. "I told myself it was simply nervous excitement."
"Or," Cordelia said grimly, "calculated control, disguised carefully as romantic attentiveness. Please, Serena. Trust me on this, even though I understand how impossible everything I'm telling you must sound."
Serena glanced toward her bedroom door, suddenly, desperately aware that Marcus was scheduled to pick her up within the hour for their final wedding rehearsal.
"What do I do?" she asked, voice trembling.
Cordelia's expression softened slightly, though urgency remained evident. "First, we need to get this dress off you properly. Then, Serena, we need to discover exactly what Marcus intends before tomorrow's ceremony arrives."
