Emeric had repaired watches for thirty years, but the pocket watch delivered anonymously to his shop accompanied by a cryptic note reading fix this before the truth stops entirely was unlike anything he'd encountered before.

The watch belonged, according to an engraving inside its case, to Cornelius Ashby, a wealthy businessman found dead eight months earlier, his ***** ruled an accidental fall down his estate's staircase. The case had gone cold quickly, lacking sufficient evidence to suggest otherwise.

The paper contained a single sentence, written in shaky, urgent handwriting: If I die suddenly, check my study's second drawer before believing whatever explanation they offer you.

Emeric brought his discovery immediately to Detective Wilhelmina Cross, who'd handled the original, ultimately unsuccessful investigation into Cornelius Ashby's *****.

They obtained proper authorization to search Ashby's study within days, his estate having remained largely untouched since his *****, managed carefully by legal executors awaiting final inheritance resolution.

Emeric studied the recovered evidence, curiosity mounting alongside genuine concern. "Who do you think sent me the watch in the first place? Someone clearly wanted this evidence properly discovered."

Wilhelmina considered the question seriously. "Someone with access to both the watch and sufficient knowledge of the hidden note's existence. Possibly someone close to Cornelius himself, frightened of confronting Reginald directly, yet unable to properly live with remaining silent."
