The Keeper of Autumn's Last Light

Every year, on the final day of autumn, Wren carried a single lantern into the forest to catch the season's last remaining light an old family duty, ensuring winter arrived properly rather than swallowing the world too suddenly, too harshly.

This year, deep among the amber-lit trees, she found a man frozen mid-step at the forest's heart, autumn leaves suspended around him as though time itself had paused the moment he'd entered.

"Can you hear me?" she asked, cautiously approaching.

His eyes shifted toward her the only part of him capable of movement. "Please," he managed, voice strained. "I've been trapped here three years. Waiting for someone with the sight to properly see me."

"What happened to you?" Wren asked, studying him with growing concern.

"I chased autumn's last light myself, foolishly, three years ago," he admitted. "Grief made me reckless I'd lost someone dear, and desperately wanted more time before winter properly arrived. The forest punished my selfish wish, freezing me here indefinitely, tangled permanently between seasons."

Wren considered his plight carefully, old family knowledge stirring. "I might be able to help. Though releasing you requires something in exchange a genuine, selfless wish, rather than desperate, selfish longing."

"I understand completely," he said. "Ask, and I'll gladly offer whatever's needed."

Wren raised her lantern gently. "Then wish, honestly, for someone else's happiness. Something entirely apart from your own desire."

He considered carefully, genuine emotion crossing his frozen features. "I wish," he said slowly, "for whoever eventually frees me to find happiness themselves, regardless of whether that happiness includes me at all."

Warm light spread instantly around him, autumn's captured magic finally releasing its firm, patient grip. He stumbled forward, freed completely, catching himself against a nearby tree.

"It worked," he breathed, astonished. "Thank you. I'm forever grateful."

Wren studied him with quiet curiosity. "What's your name?"

"Callahan," he said, smiling despite exhaustion. "And you've quite literally just saved my life, three years overdue."

"Wren," she offered in return, feeling unexpected warmth stirring at his genuine gratitude.
