The Restorer Who Uncovered a Wedding That Never Happened

Theodosia restored antique photographs for a living, painstakingly repairing damaged images from estate sales and family collections nobody else wanted to properly handle. The water-damaged wedding portrait that arrived in a box of unsorted estate photographs seemed ordinary enough at first until she noticed the bride's face had been deliberately scratched out entirely, while the groom's remained perfectly intact.

The photograph's back read simply: June 12, 1962. Never spoken of again.

Curious about the deliberate destruction, Theodosia researched the estate's original owners the Winslow family, prominent locally for generations, their current descendant having recently passed without heirs, prompting the estate sale that produced this puzzling photograph.

She brought her discovery to local historian Augustus Reeves, hoping he might recognize the wedding or explain the family's history.

"June 12, 1962," Augustus repeated, expression thoughtful. "That's peculiar. Byron Winslow married Cordelia Ashford that exact date, according to official records. Though I recall now, there were always whispered rumors suggesting the marriage ended rather abruptly, mysteriously, within its very first year."

"What happened to Cordelia?" Theodosia asked, studying the scratched-out portion where the bride's face should have been.

"That's precisely the mystery," Augustus said. "She simply vanished from public record entirely after 1963. No ***** certificate, no divorce filing, nothing indicating she'd properly moved elsewhere. She essentially disappeared without a trace."

Theodosia felt a chill settle through her chest, glancing again at the deliberately destroyed photograph. "Someone clearly wanted her erased entirely, not just from this portrait, but from history itself."

"If that's true," Augustus said grimly, "we might be looking at something considerably more sinister than a simple failed marriage."

They decided to investigate further, tracking down whatever remained of Cordelia's own family records, determined to uncover exactly what had happened to the bride so deliberately erased from her own wedding portrait, and from history itself.
