Part 2: The Portrait That Painted Her Killer

Ines watched, frozen, as the charcoal features continued sharpening with agonizing slowness a strong jawline emerging first, then the shape of deep-set eyes, each detail materializing as though some invisible hand guided the transformation.

"Please," she whispered to the portrait, "show me faster. Before it's too late for whatever you're trying to warn me about."

"He knows the portrait exists," Ottilie's fading voice warned. "He's been searching for it since the day I died. If he realizes you've discovered what it's revealing"

The voice cut off abruptly, the studio falling into sudden, heavy silence.

Ines's phone buzzed unexpectedly on the nearby table a text from an unknown number, arriving at exactly the wrong moment to feel like coincidence.

Unknown number: I heard you've been going through your aunt's old things. Anything interesting turn up?

Chills spread through her entire body. She glanced back at the portrait, the emerging face now nearly complete familiar in a way that made her stomach twist with dawning, horrified recognition.

It was Desmond Ashgrove. Her aunt's longtime neighbor, a quiet, unassuming man who'd attended Ottilie's funeral, offered condolences, even helped Ines move several boxes during her initial estate cleanup.

She typed back carefully, hands trembling. Just old paintings. Nothing particularly interesting.

Unknown number: Good. Keep it that way.

The threat, thinly veiled but unmistakable, settled ice-cold through her chest. She looked back at the portrait one final time, the face now completely, undeniably rendered Desmond's unmistakable features staring back at her from her great-aunt's final, desperate artistic testament.

Ines called Detective Marlowe Chen immediately, voice shaking as she explained everything the shifting portrait, Ottilie's whispered warning, the threatening text that had arrived at precisely the wrong moment.

"I need you to stay somewhere safe tonight," Marlowe said firmly, once Ines finished her disjointed, frightened account. "I'll dispatch someone immediately to properly secure that portrait as evidence, and we'll bring Desmond Ashgrove in for questioning first thing tomorrow."

"Do you actually believe me?" Ines asked, uncertain whether her impossible account would receive genuine, serious consideration.

"I've seen stranger things prove entirely true," Marlowe said carefully. "And given how specifically threatening that text message was, I believe we have more than sufficient reason to properly investigate Desmond regardless of the portrait's inexplicable nature."
