“I paid ₦9.1m in rent for this apartment, yet after furnishing it, the house started falling apart” — TikTok user lamentsA TikTok user has shared her experience after paying ₦9.1 million in rent for an apartment in Lagos, only to allegedly spend another ₦3.5 million fixing issues with the property.Zaynab Yusuph said the problems began after she completed the interior and furnishing of the apartment, with the roof reportedly leaking and causing her to live with mould for more than a month.She said she eventually spent over ₦3.5 million on repairs and construction work, including the roof, POP and other structural issues, which she believed should have been handled by the landlord.According to Zaynab, she repeatedly reported the problems to the caretaker and landlord through calls, text messages and reminders, but claimed nothing was done.She said she was eventually forced to pay for the repairs herself because she could not continue living in what she described as a deteriorating environment.“What makes it worse is the nonchalant attitude of both the landlord and the caretaker. Whenever I report an issue, they tend not to respond until things deteriorate even further,” she wrote.Zaynab also claimed that the landlord and caretaker often shifted responsibility to the developer and asked her to wait for the issues to be resolved.“So basically, I paid the rent, I paid to maintain the property, and now I am expected to just absorb over ₦3.5m in expenses as if it’s nothing?” she asked.She shared the experience to warn prospective tenants about allegedly poorly constructed properties and urged people to thoroughly inspect apartments before paying millions of naira in rent.Zaynab said she has receipts, videos, messages and repair records documenting the issues.Credit: @o_rija
