The Woman Who Kept Losing the Same Umbrella
Delphine lost the same green umbrella four times in six weeks, always at the same coffee shop, always retrieved eventually from a growing pile at the lost and found except each time it came back slightly different. A small repair on the handle she hadn't done herself. A new ribbon tied neatly around the clasp. Once, tucked into the folds, a receipt for coffee she hadn't purchased.
She finally asked the barista about it on her fifth visit.
"Oh, that's the guy who sits by the window most mornings," the barista said, nodding toward an empty table. "He's fixed it a couple times now. Said he felt bad watching you keep forgetting it."
"Does he have a name, this mysterious umbrella repairman?"
"Theo. He's usually in around eight, if you want to catch him."
Delphine arrived at 7:58 the next morning, more out of curiosity than any genuine plan, and found a man at the window table exactly as described, sketchbook open, a small toolkit visible in his bag beside him.
"You've been fixing my umbrella," she said, sitting down across from him without waiting for an invitation.
He looked up, faint embarrassment crossing his features. "Guilty. I hope that's not as strange as it probably sounds."
"It's a little strange," Delphine admitted. "Mostly I'm curious why you didn't just introduce yourself instead of quietly repairing my umbrella like some sort of caffeinated fairy godmother."
Theo laughed, setting down his pencil. "Fair point. I think I told myself fixing it was harmless, low-stakes. Actually talking to you felt considerably higher stakes."
"And now?"
"Now you're sitting at my table asking directly," Theo said, "so I suppose the stakes have been thoroughly raised regardless."
Delphine studied him, genuine amusement mixing with unexpected warmth. "For the record, I noticed the coffee receipt. That felt like a message."
"It was supposed to be," Theo admitted. "I chickened out of writing an actual note. A receipt felt like a safer, more deniable gesture."
"Well," Delphine said, "consider the message received. Deniably."
"Coffee, then?" Theo asked, gesturing at the counter. "Properly, in person, no umbrella-based intermediary required?"
"I'd like that," Delphine said, smiling. "Though I am keeping the umbrella. Sentimental value, now."
