Part 4 (Final): The Man Who Answered Every Wrong Number Honestly
A year to the day after Priya's accidental, mortified text about Marcus's cologne, Callum invited her to the same small café where they'd had their first proper coffee date, though this time he seemed considerably more nervous than usual.
"You're doing the thing," Priya observed, watching him fidget with his coffee cup instead of drinking it. "The nervous thing."
"Am I that obvious?"
"Extremely," Priya said, smiling. "What's going on?"
Callum took a steadying breath, pulling out his phone instead of answering directly. "I want to show you something. I saved it, actually. Your very first text."
He turned the screen toward her, the message displayed clearly: the cologne thing has officially ruined this date and I need to complain to someone immediately, Marcus really thought aggressive Axe application was the move tonight and I simply cannot
"I can't believe you kept that," Priya said, laughing despite the warmth spreading through her chest.
"I've kept every single message, actually," Callum admitted. "I went back and reread them all last week, honestly, just processing how much has changed since that first accidental, absurd text."
"And?"
"And I realized," Callum said, setting down his phone and reaching into his jacket pocket instead, "that I don't want to spend my life wondering what would have happened if you'd simply double-checked that number. I'm profoundly grateful you didn't."
He retrieved a small ring, kneeling carefully beside their café table exactly as he'd once knelt figuratively into her life through a mortifying wrong number.
"Priya, will you marry me? I know it started with cologne complaints and moon landing conspiracy theories, but everything since has been genuinely, completely real. I love you, and I don't want a single day without you, properly, deliberately, for the rest of my life."
"Yes," Priya said immediately, laughing and crying simultaneously as nearby customers began quietly applauding. "Obviously, completely, yes though I maintain Marcus deserves some small, indirect credit for this entire relationship existing."
"Marcus and his cologne will forever remain an unlikely footnote in our love story," Callum agreed, slipping the ring onto her finger, grinning as widely as she'd ever seen him.
They married the following spring, their wedding program featuring, much to their families' bemused confusion, a small dedication: In memory of Marcus's cologne and one truly unforgettable wrong number.
As they danced their first dance together, Priya rested her head against Callum's shoulder, thinking about how the most mortifying, accidental beginning had somehow led toward the most genuine, deliberate happiness she'd ever known.
