Part 2: The Woman Who Reviewed Restaurants Her Ex Couldn't Afford

Marisol met Emeric the chef, whose full name she finally learned upon arriving at his restaurant for their first proper dinner expecting perhaps a brief, pleasant conversation over one course. Instead, he personally guided her through an entire, elaborate tasting menu, explaining each dish with genuine passion that had nothing to do with impressing a food blogger and everything to do with authentic love for his craft.

"This is excessive," Marisol said, laughing as yet another course arrived. "I specifically write about expensive food, and even I think this qualifies as needlessly extravagant."

"Consider it professional research," Emeric said, settling across from her once the kitchen had properly quieted. "Besides, I wanted the chance to properly show off, given how thoroughly you've been anonymously critiquing my work for months."

"In my defense, the critiques were mostly positive," Marisol said. "Except the foam."

"The foam is officially, permanently retired," Emeric said solemnly. "You've achieved what six months of my own professional arguments couldn't."

Marisol studied him, genuine curiosity building. "Can I ask what made you actually comment on my blog? Chefs don't usually engage directly with anonymous reviewers."

Emeric considered the question thoughtfully. "Honestly? I found your writing considerably more entertaining than most professional food criticism. The running joke about your ex-husband's Caesar salad standards made me genuinely curious about the person behind it. I suppose I got invested."

"That's either flattering or slightly concerning," Marisol said, amused.

"Definitely flattering," Emeric said, smiling warmly. "I don't typically get invested in anonymous internet strangers' post-divorce restaurant vendettas. You're a rather special case."

They continued talking long after the tasting menu concluded, the restaurant's staff discreetly closing up around them as conversation flowed easily from food into considerably more personal territory Emeric's own path into professional cooking, Marisol's slow rebuilding of confidence and identity following her divorce.

"I have to admit," Marisol said, several hours into their dinner, "this is considerably more genuine connection than I expected from what started as an internet comment about garnish."

"Low bar, but I'll take the achievement," Emeric said, grinning. "Would you want to continue this properly? Beyond simply restaurant reviews and elaborate tasting menus, I mean."

"I'd like that very much," Marisol said, warmth spreading through her chest at the genuine invitation.
