Part 2: The Man Who Returned Every Library Book Early
Coffee turned into a regular Wednesday ritual, Julian's careful, anxious punctuality translating charmingly into his personal life always five minutes early, always remembering small details from their previous conversations, always following through on things he'd casually mentioned wanting to do.
"I have to ask," Genevieve said, several weeks into their new routine, "does the anxiety extend beyond library books? Or is this specifically a due-date phenomenon?"
"Extends considerably further, unfortunately," Julian admitted. "Deadlines in general. Appointments. I once showed up forty-five minutes early for a dentist appointment because I couldn't properly settle otherwise."
"That's either endearing or slightly concerning," Genevieve said, smiling.
"Generally both, if my therapist's assessment is accurate," Julian said, laughing at himself. "Though I've gotten considerably better over the years. The library situation is admittedly my last remaining, fully unresolved anxiety quirk."
"I don't mind it, for what it's worth," Genevieve said. "It's rather sweet, actually, watching someone care that much about small responsibilities."
"High praise from someone who's professionally obligated to appreciate punctual book returns," Julian said, though genuine warmth was evident beneath his teasing.
Their relationship deepened steadily over the following months, Genevieve discovering considerably more depth beneath Julian's anxious punctuality genuine kindness, thoughtful attentiveness, a dry sense of humor that emerged more confidently the longer they spent together.
"I want you to know," Julian said one evening, several months into their relationship, "you've actually helped with the anxiety thing. Not intentionally, necessarily, but just through spending time together. I've been late to a few things lately. Genuinely late, not just 'only twenty minutes early instead of forty-five' late."
"I'm going to take partial credit for that," Genevieve said, smiling warmly. "Though I hope the library books remain perpetually early. I'd hate to disrupt the staff ******* pool's entire tracking system."
"The system remains fully intact," Julian assured her solemnly. "Some anxieties are simply too foundational to properly abandon."
They continued deepening their connection, built genuinely on gentle understanding and mutual affection, Julian's careful, anxious nature finding exactly the kind of patient, warm acceptance he'd apparently been quietly hoping for throughout years of unresolved nervous habits.
