I'm still struggling to understand how we went from telling ordinary people to reduce their carbon footprints, use less electricity, and make environmentally responsible choices to watching enormous technology companies invest billions in building energy-intensive data centers that can place additional pressure on our planet's natural resources.For years, families have been encouraged to drive less, recycle more, and change their daily habits to help protect the environment, yet the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is creating huge demand for electricity, cooling infrastructure, and land that could otherwise support forests, wildlife habitats, and natural ecosystems.While technology certainly brings economic benefits and exciting opportunities, we should be asking why communities are expected to make environmental sacrifices while major corporations pursue massive developments that can increase energy consumption, put pressure on freshwater supplies, and sometimes require valuable natural land to be cleared.Real progress should mean holding everyone to the same environmental standards, because protecting our climate, preserving ancient forests, safeguarding clean water, and ensuring future generations inherit a healthy planet should always matter more than building another enormous facility without properly considering its environmental consequences.
