The Lagos State Domestic and Sexu@l V!olence Agency (DSVA) has reacted to the viral report of a 28-year-old widow simply identified as Tosin who is allegedly being harassed and intimidated by her in-laws eight days after her husband passed away.

In a statement released this morning, July 29, the agency said it successfully established contact with the survivor, who alleged that she had been subjected to threats to her life, physical ass@ult, and intimidation following the recent ***** of her husband. She further informed the Agency that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division.

The statement added that preliminary feedback from the Police confirms that the alleged perpetrator who, according to Harrison Gwamnishu, is the father-in-law, has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations continue.

The agency says the Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of the survivor and her children, while working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law.

The building, which collapsed on Monday afternoon following a severe thunderstorm, claimed one life, while several occupants narrowly escaped.

Preliminary findings by a multi-agency investigation team revealed that the structure suffered a catastrophic structural failure, causing the lower floors to sink into the ground, with only portions of the upper slab remaining visible above the debris.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m., shortly after a heavy downpour accompanied by intense thunderstorms and a reported lightning strike in the vicinity. Two women and their children reportedly escaped moments after noticing signs of structural distress, while a young man sustained minor injuries as he fled the building before it gave way.

Emergency responders, including officials of the Ogun State Safety Office, State Fire Service, Ministries of Environment, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Works and Infrastructure, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Ifo Local Government Water and Environmental Sanitation Department, immediately mobilised to the scene and commenced coordinated search-and-rescue operations. Contractors working within the Akute-Alagbole and Agbado axis also swiftly deployed heavy equipment to the site, joining the rescue efforts less than 10 minutes after the collapse.

Although initial surface searches did not locate any victims, traces of blood and footprints beneath the rubble prompted emergency teams to undertake a carefully controlled excavation exercise. The operation eventually led to the recovery of one deceased victim.

Gunmen have kidnapped three students of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) from their off-campus lodge in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

A student who asked not to be named for security reasons said the 100-level students were kidnapped at Sure Leaders Lodge in the Bukan Kwato area of Lafia at about 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

As of the time of filing this report, the police had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

However, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the university confirmed the development in a public safety notice issued on Sunday, saying it had begun engaging traditional authorities and the university management over the incident.

Students’ Union leadership has met with the District Head and relevant authorities and is collaborating with the University Management on security measures,” the statement signed by the SUG President, Jabir Ibrahim, and Secretary-General, Ibrahim Aliyu, said.

The union urged students to remain calm while security efforts continue.

Police have named a 16-year-old boy who d!ed after getting into difficulty in a lake in Lincoln, United Kingdom.

Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, also known as Tomiwa, was rescued from Swanholme Lakes on 9 July, 2026 and d!ed later in hospital, Lincolnshire Police said in a statement on Friday, July 17.

Lincolnshire Police received a call at around 5:48pm reporting a concern for safety at the popular lake location.

Emergency services, including Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and the East Midlands Ambulance Service, attended the scene to rescue the boy.

Despite initial signs of response to treatment at the location, he sadly passed away at the hospital at 8:50pm with his parents by his side.

Police have announced that a file will be passed to the coroner for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.

In the statement issued by Lincolnshire Police, Tomiwa’s parents, Abiodun and Tope Micheal, described him as a “vibrant, energetic and unforgettable young man whose presence illuminated every space he entered”.

“His laughter, warmth and joyful spirit touched countless lives,” they added.

Tomiwa was the eldest of four brothers and was described as a “protector” and “constant source of encouragement”.

“His younger brothers adored him and he cared for them with tenderness, always making them smile and supporting them in every way,” his parents said.

The parents said Tomiwa, who played for Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC, was a “social butterfly” who always made friends.

“He consistently sought the good of others and uplifted those around him,” they said.

“His home was filled with laughter because of his unique spirit, infectious joy and generous heart.”

Tomiwa was also an active member of the church youth ministry.

“Tomiwa leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, discipline, joy and compassion. Though his life was short, it was profoundly impactful,” his parents said.

“He leaves a lasting example for his brothers, comfort for his parents and cherished memories for everyone who knew him.

“Tomiwa will forever remain in our heart.”

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Sector Command, has confirmed a f@tal lone road traffic cr@sh that cl@imed the liv£s of three persons on Friday, July 17, 2026.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. near St. Jude Catholic Church, Adazi-Ani, along the Nnobi–Agulu–Awka Road.

According to the FRSC, the cr@sh involved a Mercedes-Benz 608 commercial truck with registration number XB270NNL.

Preliminary investigation showed that the vehicle suffered a mechanical failure, c@ught f!re, and the driver lost c0ntrol.

This legislative update, which currently awaits the president’s signature to become law, also introduces a ₦50,000 fine, a six-month jail term, or both, for drivers who refuse to undergo roadside breathalyzer tests when requested by road safety officers on reasonable suspicion.

According to the details of the modified bill, fines for numerous traffic violations have been raised by up to 300 percent. This upward review is part of a broader legislative push to discourage reckless driving, ensure stricter adherence to traffic laws, and minimize road accidents.

The piece of legislation, formally known as the Federal Road Safety Corps Act (Amendment), 2026 (HBs. 1401 & 1604 – For Concurrence), was presented for its first reading in the Senate on July 1, 2026.

With the introduction of these new clauses, anyone caught hawking goods or preaching inside public transport vehicles will be prosecuted and faces a ₦50,000 fine upon conviction. Members of the upper legislative chamber noted that this measure is designed to eliminate dangerous distractions inside commercial buses and safeguard passengers.

During the debate on the proposed amendments, lawmakers maintained that harsher penalties have become vital to curbing persistent lawlessness and dangerous habits on public roads.

Furthermore, the bill raises the penalty for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from the previous ₦5,000 to ₦100,000. Violators also risk a prison sentence of up to two years, or both. The law specifies that it is a punishable offense to drive or attempt to drive a vehicle when impaired by alcohol or drugs beyond the permissible threshold, or to a degree that compromises safe vehicle control.

The Oyo State Fire Service rescued a six-month-old baby from a burning building in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State on Saturday night, July 11.

According to reports, a gas leak resulted in the fire outbreak that engulfed the ground floor of the private one-storey residential building.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Reform, Morrof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call from one Mr Abiodun Mayowa reporting the fire.

“At exactly 20:38 hrs on Saturday, July 11, 2026, our office received a distress call through a telephone call from Mr Abiodun Mayowa reporting a house on fire at Olomi Compound in Ogbomoso.

Fire personnel, led by PFS II Oluwaleye, were immediately mobilised and promptly arrived at the scene.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that the ground floor of a private one-storey residential building comprising three rooms was engulfed in flames.

The firefighting crew swiftly commenced operations and successfully extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the upper floor of the building and the adjoining property.

A baby of about six months was successfully rescued alive from the burning building. The fire was caused by an unattended gas leak.

The Officer-in-Charge conducted a brief fire safety lecture for the occupants and sympathisers, educating them on essential fire prevention measures to prevent future occurrences,” the chairman said.

A two-storey building under construction at Sultan Road in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State has collapsed, leaving four people trapped beneath the rubble.

Eyewitnesses said construction workers noticed signs of structural failure while working on the top floor and rushed to safety.

However, four people, including a security guard and a tricycle rider, were caught in the collapse.

Confirming the incident to Daily Trust, ‎one of the workers, Shuaibu Yaro, said three victims had been rescued while efforts were ongoing to save the fourth.

“We came to work here and had started taking sand upstairs when the site engineer noticed the signs of collapse. We rushed to safety, but unfortunately three people were in front of the gate and one other person was trapped,” Yaro said.

‎“Three have been rescued, including the security guard and his friend, while one person remains trapped.”

He said those rescued have sustained injuries and were rushed to Sir Muhammadu Sanusi Hospital in Kano for treatment.

As of the time of filing this story, rescue operations are still underway at the site.

The Nigeria Police Force, Airport Police Command, is set to arraign two suspects, Enaruna Prince Aghama (51) and Tony Ajayi (43), for acts of unruly conduct and behaviour likely to cause a breach of peace.

A statement from the airport command’s spokesperson, ASP Mohammed Adeola, said the suspects were handed over to the International Airport Police Division by Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel upon the aircraft’s arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, for further investigation.

Adeola said preliminary investigation revealed that at about 7.44pm on July 9, while aboard an Air Peace flight from South Africa to Lagos, the suspects lit and smoked cigarettes inside the aircraft, an action which activated the aircraft’s smoke detection and emergency alarm system, causing panic and anxiety among passengers and cabin crew. He said further inquiries disclosed that the suspects were also in possession of an alcoholic beverage and became uncooperative and verbally aggressive when cabin crew members attempted to de-escalate the situation and enforce established safety regulations, thereby further disrupting the orderly conduct of the flight.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, condemned the conduct of the suspects, describing any act capable of compromising aviation safety or disrupting the orderly operation of an aircraft as unacceptable. She reiterated that the Airport Police Command remains committed to the strict enforcement of aviation security laws and the protection of the lives of passengers, crew members, and all airport users, in line with the provisions of the relevant aviation regulations and the FAAN By-Laws.
