A Nigerian nurse has warned people against giving water to accident victims immediately after a crash, explaining that what may seem like a simple act of kindness could potentially put the victim at greater risk.

According to the nurse, accident victims may be in shock or have suffered a head injury, which could affect their ability to swallow properly.

She explained that giving them water in such a condition could cause them to choke or aspirate the liquid into their lungs.

The nurse also said accident victims may require emergency surgery and anaesthesia, making it important for medical professionals to assess them before they consume anything.

She further pointed to the possibility of internal injuries and bleeding, stressing that severe thirst after an accident should not automatically be treated with water.

Rather than giving the victim water, she advised people to focus on getting emergency medical help and, while waiting, keep the person’s airway clear and avoid giving them anything to eat or drink.

Her advice has since sparked conversations online about some of the common things Nigerians do when trying to help accident victims at the scene of a crash.

A Nigerian man has narrated an encounter he claims he had with officers of the Nigeria Police Force, alleging that his phone was taken and searched while he was at a police station.

According to the man, he was stopped at a checkpoint while on his way to the bank to get money for food after his wife recently gave birth.

He said officers questioned him about his vehicle documents before allegedly taking him to their office after suspecting that he was recording them.

The man claimed that while his phone was in the possession of one of the officers, it was searched and private videos of his wife during childbirth were allegedly found on the device.

He claimed that the police officer watched the videos showing his wife during labour and in a private state while giving birth to their child, expressing shock at the alleged incident

The man also alleged that the officers demanded money for fuel during the encounter, although he said he did not have cash on him because he was heading to the bank.

He later said the situation was eventually resolved and his documents were returned to him.

A barber in Umuahia, Abia State, has been arrested after being accused of using the hair of his customers for rituals.

The man, identified only as Emeka, was nabbed after a clay pot stuffed with shaved human hair was allegedly found inside his one-room apartment in Umuahia.

The discovery was made on Tuesday, July 28, after the barber's neighbour, Mr. Johnson Ikenga, lodged a report to the police complaining that Emeka was threatening him.

A search was reportedly conducted by policemen in the suspect’s house during the arrest, which led to the discovery of the pot filled with human hair and other fetish items.

When interrogated, the barber confessed that the pot belonged to him, but could not explain what he used the items for, or where he sourced the hairs.

The suspect was taken away by police officers from Central Police Station, Umuahia.

Nigerian writer and commentator Solomon Buchi has criticised South African singer Tyla over her planned performance in Nigeria, calling on Nigerians to boycott the show.

Buchi argued that Tyla remained silent during xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other immigrants in South Africa, but is now planning to perform for Nigerian fans.

According to him, Nigerians should use the planned concert as an opportunity to make a statement against xenophobia rather than welcome the singer “with open arms.”

“Tyler must not have that show,” Buchi said, arguing that Nigerians should support local artistes instead.

He also suggested that Nigerians who love Tyla’s music could travel to South Africa to attend her shows, while urging those who attend her Nigerian concert to protest peacefully against xenophobia.

“It’s not about Tyla. I have no beef with her, but it’s about coming together as a people and saying, no, we have a voice and that voice matters,” he said.

A young Nigerian woman, Stella Okeme, has cried out for help, alleging that she has been subjected to mistreatment and intimidation by her husband.

In a video shared online, Stella said her husband treated her well before their traditional marriage last year but allegedly changed after they got married.

She claimed that she has been bullied and physically abused and said she now wants to leave the marriage but has nowhere to go.

Stella, who has a young daughter, appealed to Nigerians to help her find a safe place to stay, saying she has no one to turn to.
