South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on African nations to to cooperate on migration and protect human rights.

He made the appeal while addressing the Pan-African Parliament on Monday, July 28, following weeks of anti-immigrant protests led by groups that accuse undocumented migrants of fueling unemployment, crime, and mounting pressure on public services.

“We need to work together to address issues like conflict, instability, poverty and social discord,” Ramaphosa said on Monday.

“As African countries, we have to acknowledge and address the conditions that drive migration in the first place,” Ramaphosa told a session of the parliament, which is the legislative body of the African Union.

South Africa is facing growing criticism from other African governments over attacks on their citizens in South Africa.

At least four migrants have been killed in the violence, including a Nigerian national who died while under arrest in Cape Town.

The attacks were “sad and abhorrent”, Ramaphosa said, adding that “we in South Africa deeply regret and mourn” the lives lost. “We’ve taken a firm stand against hatred for people from other countries, xenophobia or Afrophobia,” Ramaphosa said.

Thousands of African migrants have left South Africa over the past two months, with countries including Ghana, Nigeria, and Malawi assisting in the voluntary repatriation of their citizens.

‘Recall that earlier this week, the Senate passed the redrafted Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing heavy penalties for various road and transit-related infractions. A Senate bill seeking to compel social media platforms, including Meta, Google, and X, to establish physical offices in Nigeria has progressed after receiving broad support from stakeholders at a public hearing.

The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 to mandate social media platforms operating in the country to maintain physical offices in Nigeria. The bill was considered at a public hearing organised by the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security.

Speaking at the hearing, the committee chairman stated that the social media bill was designed to strengthen the protection of Nigeria’s cyberspace, while the accompanying AI academy bill would provide a centre of excellence for artificial intelligence education and research.

Representing the Senate leadership, a statement was delivered describing the bills as forward-looking legislative proposals that reflect commitment to improving governance through legislation. It was emphasized that the bill requiring social media companies to establish physical offices in Nigeria was not intended to stifle innovation or discourage investment.

This position was echoed during presentation of the proposed law, emphasizing its goal to encourage technology companies to deepen their engagement with the country:

“This bill is neither punitive nor hostile to innovation. It is not designed to frustrate investment or discourage technology companies from operating in Nigeria. On the contrary, it seeks to deepen their engagement with Nigeria by encouraging them to become true corporate citizens of our country.”

Two Nigerian nationals have been sentenced to seven years in prison for armed robbery in Kuwait 🇰🇼

The Kuwait General Department of Criminal Investigation in Ahmadi Governorate arrested the two individuals over alleged involvement in an armed robbery and theft of a currency exchange shop in Mahboula, in January 2025.

The Court of Appeal on Monday, July 20, 2026 upheld the imprisonment of the defendants for seven years and six months in connection with the robbery and theft.

The Second Circuit of the Court of Appeal, headed by Counselor Nasr Salem Al-Haid and comprising Counselors Mutaib Al-Aradhi and Saud Al-Sane, upheld the ruling against members of a Nigerian gang involved in the robbery and theft of the money exchange shop.

The Public Prosecution had charged the first four defendants with stealing money from the exchange shop, with the second defendant using a fake gun and enabling the third and fourth defendants to steal the money with the assistance of the first defendant.

The fifth defendant was charged with participating with the defendants, agreeing to commit the crime, helping them conceal the stolen goods, and supplying them with the money obtained from the robbery and theft.

The Criminal Court had sentenced the first and fifth defendants in person, while the remaining defendants were sentenced in absentia.

The court had initially sentenced the first four defendants to seven years’ imprisonment and the fifth defendant to six months’ imprisonment after amending the description and charges.

Reality TV star Whitemoney has sparked conversations online after sharing his thoughts on Nigeria's current state.

This legislative update, which currently awaits the president’s signature to become law, also introduces a ₦50,000 fine, a six-month jail term, or both, for drivers who refuse to undergo roadside breathalyzer tests when requested by road safety officers on reasonable suspicion.

According to the details of the modified bill, fines for numerous traffic violations have been raised by up to 300 percent. This upward review is part of a broader legislative push to discourage reckless driving, ensure stricter adherence to traffic laws, and minimize road accidents.

The piece of legislation, formally known as the Federal Road Safety Corps Act (Amendment), 2026 (HBs. 1401 & 1604 – For Concurrence), was presented for its first reading in the Senate on July 1, 2026.

With the introduction of these new clauses, anyone caught hawking goods or preaching inside public transport vehicles will be prosecuted and faces a ₦50,000 fine upon conviction. Members of the upper legislative chamber noted that this measure is designed to eliminate dangerous distractions inside commercial buses and safeguard passengers.

During the debate on the proposed amendments, lawmakers maintained that harsher penalties have become vital to curbing persistent lawlessness and dangerous habits on public roads.

Furthermore, the bill raises the penalty for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from the previous ₦5,000 to ₦100,000. Violators also risk a prison sentence of up to two years, or both. The law specifies that it is a punishable offense to drive or attempt to drive a vehicle when impaired by alcohol or drugs beyond the permissible threshold, or to a degree that compromises safe vehicle control.
